NASHVILLE, TN (August 2, 2019) – Heartache has been a driving theme in Country music but MIDLAND offers their take on the classic sentiment with “Cheatin’ Songs.” The trio’s Jess Carson, Cameron Duddy and Mark Wystrach wrote the track alongside Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. Wystrach’s voice, at its most agile, slides through a melody that shimmies like a little black dress wiggling– and that’s just the point. Smooth with a whole lot of wrong kind of reality, the time signature changes before a final naked chorus offers just a waft of reckoning:
She’s bringin’ back cheatin’ songs
The kind of hurt that gets you singin’ along
Something circa 1973
She’s lying with him and she’s lying to me
She’s bringin’ back diamond rings
Slipped in the pocket of her tight, fittin’ jeans
It’s back in fashion doin’ somebody wrong
She’s bringin’ back cheatin’ songs
Midland’s signature twang with a modern twist echoes throughout “Cheatin’ Songs” while adding to the versatile emotions on their forthcoming album. LET IT ROLL is due August 23 via Big Machine Records and also features the soulful “Put The Hurt On Me,” rowdy “Playboys” and current single “Mr. Lonely.” The Grammy-nominated troubadours brought the recordings to live audiences last week with an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (watch here) and a moderated conversation with GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman, plus a preview of more new songs in front of the sold-out crowd.
Spending the last three years on the road headlining and supporting some of country music’s biggest stars like George Strait, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Little Big Town, Midland has grown from bar band to major crowd pleasers. They will kick off their LET IT ROLL TOUR September 17 in New York City at Terminal 5 with dates traversing the globe throughout the fall.
