“Good Ol’ Boys,” which was named on of Billboard’s “6 Must-Hear New Country Songs” last week and received an 8.9 on Country Central (an impressive feat for a newcomer) is a powerful storytelling track with an important message that needs to be heard. The ballad takes aim at the wolves in sheep’s clothing and joins the ranks of songs like Kira Isabella’s “Quarterback” and Martina McBride’s “Independence Day,” by addressing issues that often remain hidden behind closed doors. The single consistently moves audiences to tears during live performances and is guaranteed to continue to continue resonating with listeners as Mae uses her somber vocals to establish herself as an artist ready to stand up, shine light on important topics and make change.
“There is all kinds of heartbreak in life and Country music, but nothing hits harder than the heartbreak that comes from someone you never expected to hurt you” explains Estes. “I was raised in a small town in the south, surrounded by honest, hardworking, godly, well-mannered men that we lovingly called ‘good ol’ boys.’ This important song shares the persecutive of a heartbroken woman, forever changed by the betrayal of a man she thought she could trust. I have such respect and admiration for the ‘three chords and the truth’ sentiment of traditional Country music and tried my best to channel that when writing this unapologetic story.”
What the critics are saying about “Good Ol’ Boys”:
“One of the most truthful, vulnerable storytelling songs released this year… Songs like this, though somber and somewhat sad, make you proud to be a fan of a genre that doesn’t shy away from the hard topics. In just over three minutes, the track stirs emotions, warns listeners, and empowers those who have felt alone.”
–Country Central
“6 Must-Hear New Country Songs” –Billboard
“Though naturally carrying a weightiness within her subdued vocals as they pace along the haunting, Appalachian infused melody, the song written by Estes, Marti Dodson, SJ McDonald, and Autumn McEntire becomes a shining light of hope that gives you permission to talk about the things you were never meant to talk about while finding the jagged pieces of your fractured healing one conversation at a time.” –Today’s Country Magazine
“Best New Country Songs” –Holler
“’Good Ol’ Boys’ is more than just a song—it’s a call for healing, empowerment, and awareness of the trauma that girls can go through.” –Entertainment Focus
Estes also received high praise from the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson, who told The New York Times that Mae is one of the women in Country music that ““Their stuff is just as good, if not better, than a lot of the music you’re hearing right now. It’s a damn shame. They deserve to be heard.”
Estes recently performed the National Anthem at Sunday’s Titans game and performed as part of the Music City Grand Prix’s Freedom Friday (which brought tens of thousands of concert goers to downtown Nashville). This week Estes will be performing at Americana Fest and will serve as a red carpet correspondent on behalf of Holler. In the coming months, she will be out on select dates with Kimberly Perry and open for Lainey Wilson at this year’s NFR. It was also recently announced as part of the Stagecoach 2025 lineup.
